First of all let me say that there is still no AC in this house. However I was not deterred b/c of that. On Friday after perhaps the quickest 20 minute closing I have ever seen, I was off to the house to start working.
I started by pulling up all the carpeting. Under two of the floors I found almost completely intact hardwood and the third room had newer plywood. There is still a good bit of tile that needs to come up but that is a more intense project that I am hoping to due tomorrow once I can get at least a window unit in the house. This morning a foundation guy started to repair 9 pillars under the house. This is to better stabilize the house and hopefully better level the floors. Once all of this has happened, I will be having someone put in new bamboo flooring.
If everything goes as planned I should be able to move in about two weeks. While I'm waiting I will be getting some help with fencing and start doing some other yard work.
I have taken pictures and will work and getting them posted asap.

All sounds good. Window a/c unit would work wonders at improving your ability to work around there. Are you going to keep the existing hardwood floors or are you replacing the whole thing? Aleta has bamboo flooring in her bedroom and it is beautiful. We had a floor installation party one time-Phil, Phil, jr., Aleta's dad and her uncle and last and least of all, me. I think I carried some boxes of the wood up to the second floor and generally tried to stay out of the installers' way.
If the original floor is beautiful, have you thought of just having it sanded and refinished? Just a thought. If you don't want any more suggestions from a nosey, old auntie, just say the word.
Love ya.
pictures please!!!
sounds like a fun project...but get that a/c!!
bec and john are putting bamboo floors in the upstairs of their house. they picked out a dark stain which is really nice, and doesn't look at all like traditional bamboo. it seemed easy (ish) to install too.
what is the neighborhood called again?
Oh no, I love all the suggestions. Once the house is more or less leveled and I see what it is going to cost, I may end up refinishing the old floor in two rooms and then adding the bamboo elsewhere.
To answer Laurel question, the neighborhood is called Maryville. It was one of the original all black neighborhoods until about 10 years or so when the other folk started slowly moving in. There is a large bike bath that runs along the back of my property and across from that is a Habitat house going up. So it's still a growing place.
Sounds like hot wook in a very hot coontry...that's why they call it the low country. Good for you, Ian! Get the a/c and don't lose your enthusiasam.
Love,
Bubba
